    McPherson for Kemp!

Tuesday, July 1, 2008, 01:09 PM PST [General]

It's easy to think of Dallas McPherson as a journeyman.

After all, he's been on everyone's radar since that 40-homer campaign in the minors back in 2004 and has already played for the Anaheim and Los Angeles Angels in parts of three big league seasons.

He was hyped and didn't deliver, so we moved on. But the kid is only 27, which in fantasy terms might just put him on the cusp of Custness. You may remember that A's slugger Jack Cust - a truer journeyman there never was - was also 27 last year when Oakland threw him a lifeline that led to a 26-homer, 82-RBI season.

McPherson hasn't been given that chance yet. In fact, it might not come at all. He's with the Marlins organization now and they simply don't have a spot with him on the parent club.

Those unfortunate circumstances haven't prevented McPherson from turning the Pacific Coast League into his own personal teeing ground. Friday the powerful lefty hit his 28th homer of the season to build on his minor league lead. He entered the game needing a homer to tie the Pacific Coast League record for consecutive games with a home run with seven. He got it, then sat the nightcap of the doubleheader.

McPherson acknowledges that he's unsure what the future holds for him in Florida, but with the trade deadline a month away, opportunity could knock. The Marlins could buy and ship McPherson to fill a need or sell and create an opportunity at the big league level.

Either way, his is a name to watch when deals start going down. Offensively, there really hasn't been a hole in his game, as evidenced by his .309/.418/.695 figures entering the weekend. Despite a rash of injuries in recent seasons, he even has seven stolen bases (he once stole 30 in the minors).

The Dodgers are in need of some power and have a void at 3rd base.  They would benefit from an aquisition for McPherson.  A perfect candidate for McPherson would be Matt Kemp.  Kemp doesn't get along with all of his teammates and the Dodgers have too many OF's.  Are the Dodgers really going to wait for more players to develop?  They can trade LaRoche for a SP and use DeWitt as a backup.  They can drop Sweeney and use Nomar as a pinch hitter.
