At 2pm P.T. the Philadelphia 76ers are supposed to make a major player announcement....I'm guessing it's Elton Brand not Allen Iverson, but who knows? If Brand does become a 76er today and Corey Maggette goes to the Warriors, as reported the Clippers must figure out what to do next.
While Elton Brand was the second best player in Los Angeles, he was a Clipper in a Laker town and maybe that's why he left.
Now it's important that the Clippers officially sign Baron Davis and then look for free agents. Rumors have it that the Clippers are after Josh Smith and/or Emeka Okafor. Smith may not be the answer, but Okafor is a strong low-post presence that likes to play defense and block shots...a rarity in the NBA..
He was a Bobcat, so a Clipper wouldn't be much of a down grade....
What is most shocking to the hundreds of Clippers fans around the country is that you can't blame this on Donald Sterling. The man most well known for not being Jerry Buss has started to spend some $ but unless he can sign a few more big names it doesn't look like it will make a difference in next years win/loss record.
Just when the Clippers thought they had become more relevant than the Sparks Elton Brand pulls this......
The star forward can't seem to make up his mind; he can't decide which town he would like to be ripped off in when he fills his gas tank (LA, Golden State or Philly). The Clippers thought by adding Baron Davis they had almost guaranteed that Brand would re-sign as a Clipper, but Davis' signing freed up salary cap space for the Warriors who are making a strong run at Brand.
As strange as this next sentence will sound it's not a misprint.....if Brand wants to win he should stay in LA. He could make about $10 million more if he bolts for the bay area, but the combination of Brand, Davis and Kaman could be deadly if they all stay healthy.
We won't know till probably Wednesday, but for the Clippers sake let's hope Elton decides to play second fiddle to the Lakers and Sparks and stay a Clipper.
After numerous sleepless nights leading up to last weeks NBA Draft it looks like Pat Riley made the right decision when he and the Miami Heat chose Michael Beasley with the second pick in the NBA Draft......(all that time away from the Heat scouting players is probably why he made the right choice....and the fact the Bulls already took Derrick Rose...)
The 6'10'' or 6'8'' forward depending on the tape measure...was unable to complete his first NBA practice, no not because he wasn't getting enough shots, or because he was practicing with a summer league team, or even because Pat Riley spilled hair gel on the court, instead it was due to an elbow in the chest from a teammate.
Then in true NBA fashion B-Easy made like a poor man's Paul Pierce.. not quite Dwyane Wade...but give him time to observe Flash and he'll have the routine down pat. (**** Vitale always told us this guy would make a great pro, but showing such potential so soon is unbelievable....all Rose has done is throw out a few first pitches, and I don't think the south or north siders are looking for pitching)
No comment from the Heat on whether Beasley needed a wheelchair to exit practice, the only statement was that Beasley was being taken for further evaluation....you know to see why he would agree to play for the Heat in the first place.....
The day of reckoning is almost upon us, when fans from across the country gather around their television sets to watch numerous 19 to 22 year olds get rich. No it's not the NFL Draft, but the NBA Draft.
Both drafts are well publicized and the NBA Draft is widely known as the quicker draft, but which draft is more exciting for fans? Let's break it down...
NFL Draft
Pros: Kirk Herbstreit (enough said...)
Combine workouts
Raiders making their annual 1st pick
Vikings forgetting to pick
Keyshwan Johnson commentating ( Watching the Panthers pick his replacement...Dwayne Jarrett)
Top player out of USC gets drafted and then investigated
John Clayton recaps draft on radio
Cons: Starts on a Saturday morning
Takes two full days
Count Chocula...I mean.......Mel Kiper Jr.
Time between picks is too long (they did shorten it, but so what)
Peyton Manning commercials...(case for all NFL telecasts)
Patriots having a great draft
John Clayton recaps draft on TV
NBA Draft
Pros: Stephen A. Smith ( loves those Cheesy Poofs) youtube it...
Jay Bilas (He's a lawyer???)
Takes about an hour
David Stern trying to pronounce foreign names
Every pick is a full foot taller than Stern
Fire D' Antoni chants
Players to be named later
Cash considerations
Top USC player under investigation gets drafted
Cons: Jalen Rose's suit
Players whining about age limit
$100 Million shoe contracts and 0 games played
Knicks fans
No More "FIRE ISAIAH" chants
**** Vitale and Tyler Hansbrough...o wait that's next year...
Bottom line no matter which draft or team you're a fan of at the end of the day if you watch one or both drafts in their entirety you still won't have anymore money then when you sat on the couch. So enjoy...........
Last night history was made at Staples Center...sort of...No, Luke Walton didn't hit an open three and Kobe Bryant didn't have 13 assists, but Candace Parker did become only the second woman to dunk in a WNBA game as the Los Angeles Sparks defeated the Indiana Fever 77-63 .
Of course Parker's teammate, Lisa Leslie, was the first woman to dunk in a WNBA game back in 2002. I'm not sure what to make of this....I mean Parker dunked a bunch of times in college at Tennessee. Parker has shown she can dunk, and was quoted as saying, "There's going to be more to come in the league itself."
Wait a minute......I thought the NBA was the league I was supposed to watch if I wanted to see players throw down (not like Auburn Hills and Ron Artest, think Vince Carter) and the WNBA prided itself on being the more pure league, that relied on better shooting and fundamentals. Obviously two dunks is not an epidemic, but then why exactly is this news. I guess fans think this will change the way men view the WNBA...you know the same way the 99 women's soccer team changed everything....
If you're the WNBA you can't help but be pleased with the publicity Parker has started for the league, but on the other side of the spectrum, the dunk is not what the WNBA is about...o who am I kidding it's only the WNBA it doesn't matter.
