The Red Sox, hurting with injuries to David Ortiz, Mike Lowell and Jason Veritak, put in a waiver claim for Giles and are now trying to work out a deal to acquire Giles. The Red Sox would pick up the 11-million dollar option on next year's contract in addition to the remainder of this years contract.
Padres scouts have been at Pawtucket and Portland looking at Red Sox prospects. Amongst the players they are interested in are 24-home run hitting outfielder Chris Carter, young shortstop Jed Lowrie, and 5-Red Sox pitchers. Included that group are starter Clay Buckholz, who threw a no-hitter last year, Dave Pauley, who is (12-4) at Pawtucket; Hunter Jones, who is (7-2) as a reliever; Justin Masterson, who has a 2.89-at Triple Al, and Mike Bowden, who is (9-4) at Double A-Portland.
