Chargers doctors reportedly told him in his exit physical the lst week of February they wanted him to have knee surgery, but he deferred instead to do rehab. As his conditioned worsened in late July, he sought out 4-knee specialists, who told him the exact same recommendation.
Response has been swift and mostly negative.

ESPN's Eric Allen said Merriman is jeopardizing his career at age 25.
Marcellus Wiley, the ex-Charger, said he will get no reward from the club for what he is doing, they will use him up then get rid of him.
Rod Woodson of the NFL-Network called GM-AJ Smith and Coach Norv Turner shameful for putting Merriman on the field 'hurt'.
NFL doctor Neal El-Attrache fears there will be more physical damage to the knee as he tries to play, using words career-threatening.
NFL.com said Merriman's decision is all based on money, his urge to get another 1.5-million bonus this year, that would net him 4.4-million overall, even at the risk of blowing next year's 3.7-million guarantee and putting his free-agent status in jeopardy.
Merriman has been a 'lightning rod' for reaction since he was drafted. He told Chargers fans he would make them forget Junior Seau; he was criticized for showboating with his stomp-sack dance; his games have been marked by big hits and questionable hits on Priest Holmes and Vince Young; and the negative reaction he received from the steroid suspension.
